Part 1: What is All the Fuss about Regarding Eco-friendly Supplement Packaging

At SHINE Health we understand that we are only as healthy as the environment that we live in…

healthy planet

We can have all the knowledge to make the best choices regarding our food and supplements… but if our water, soil and air become contaminated, the health of Earth’s residents becomes compromised.

When our planet is facing such serious ecological issues it is up to all of us to do our part to reduce our impact by making eco-friendly and sustainable choices...

But…considering the impact on our environment when we make food and lifestyle choices needs to go further than buzz words.

One of the issues that has come to the forefront over the last few years is the constant introduction of plastics to our landfills. The biggest polluters that have come under fire include plastic straws, water bottles, grocery bags and toothbrushes…but this is only the tip of the iceberg.

When you take a look around your home you can see hundreds of plastics that will eventually end up negatively impacting our ecosystem.

Children’s toys, storage containers, garbage bags, certain textiles, furniture, food packaging…and even supplement bottles are all contributing to the total load of plastic that ends up back in our environment.

Pollution from plastics has taken over large areas of our rivers and oceans. Plastics pose a specific threat to our health because they contain chemical elements that, when broken down, work as endocrine disruptors.

Endocrine disruptors are pollutants that interfere with our naturally occurring hormones. Xenoestrogens are toxins that are found in plastic that have a similar chemical structure to naturally occurring estrogen.

When these toxins end up in our environment… and subsequently in our bodies, they disrupt our own estrogen balance because our body mistakes them for natural estrogen. This disruption can lead to all kinds of different hormone related health issues, including infertility and certain types of cancers.

It is a bit ironic that so many of the products that we use to restore our health are packaged in a material that can contribute to the harm of our environment and our own health.

Vitamins and supplements sold on the shelves of health food stores are most often packaged in plastic. Selling health in unhealthy packaging doesn’t make a lot of sense.

While recycling assists in catching a portion of these items and reusing them before they hit the landfill…there is always an end stage use.

Recyclable materials are not the best option. We can do better.

The best option is to not create the pollutant in the first place.

We as consumers hold the greatest power to dictate how our food and supplements are packaged through the choices we make as we fill our carts.

When we collectively stop purchasing anything health related that is contained in a plastic bottle or wrapping, we are making a statement about our priorities for our planet as well as our own health and the health of our children.

At SHINE Health we are committed to reducing our impact on our planet. This includes a decision to use only environmentally friendly, 100% compostable materials in the packaging for all of our supplements.

We are dedicated to this endeavor and see it as the only option to fulfill our mission of providing truly healthy solutions for our families, friends and customers.

As we lead up to our launch we are looking for partners who agree with our assertion that vitamins belong in sustainable packaging.

We are currently searching out the best options and would love your input!

Our goal is to use minimal packaging that is also free of harmful plastics.

This is not the easiest or most profitable choice to make but we know that care for our planet is foundational to the health of its residents.

Join the SHINE family as we become pioneers in sustainability and offer Canadian consumers an environmentally conscious option to their vitamin choices.
